Midjourney is a text-to-image artificial intelligence (AI) created by an independent research lab of the same name. Much like DALL-E and Stable Diffusion, it is a form of generative AI that uses machine learning models, taking text prompts to output a new image.
What makes Midjourney unique from DALL-E and Stable Diffusion is that it currently only runs as a bot via Discord (a popular chat platform) and tends to generate a more ‘painted’ look, as opposed to the more photorealistic style enabled by an AI like DALL-E.
Additionally, Midjourney is a proprietary AI, which allows for greater control and moderation of what the machine may be learning. DALL-E is a proprietary AI as well, whereas Stable Diffusion is open-source.
While this opens amazing doors to the creative potential of machine learning, you should always be aware of those using the technology in bad faith. As AI generated images become more photorealistic, malicious parties may use this technology to forge images and information.
